Crediting the AI

In NextBSD returns to dollop Apple source on FreeBSD, Liam Proven looks at Joe Maloney’s revival of NextBSD and the unusual development team behind it.

“AI is a force multiplier here. It is my team of developers, but I am steering the entire thing.”

The NextBSD website credits Claude alongside Maloney as an AI collaborator working on porting, auditing, and integration.

That feels notable.

Developers are already using AI throughout their work, but most projects either hide it or reduce it to a footnote. Maloney is being direct about the division of labor. Claude contributes heavily, while he reviews the work, directs the architecture, builds the tests, and remains responsible for what ships.

I do not think crediting Claude diminishes the human contribution. It makes the process more honest. The important question is not whether AI touched the code. It is whether someone understands it, tests it, and accepts responsibility for it.
