A Title Change Is a Trade

In I Tracked 997 Chrome Extensions That Changed Their Titles, Joseph Hu analyzes what happened after hundreds of extensions changed their Chrome Web Store titles.

“Treat title edits as trades, not rewording.”

Extensions that changed their titles were nearly four times more likely to see a meaningful ranking change within two weeks. But the odds of gaining or losing were almost identical.

The Mailmeteor example makes the trade especially clear. Changing its title from “Gmail AI Email Assistant” to “Mail Merge for Gmail” helped it reach the top three for several mail-merge searches while giving up its number-one position for “email assistant.”

The other notable finding is that smaller extensions can outrank competitors with hundreds of thousands of users when their titles closely match what people are searching for.

What the data cannot tell us is whether those rankings produced more installs or better customers. A lower-volume phrase with clear intent may be worth much more than a broad number-one ranking.

Changing a title is not merely making the wording sound better. It is deciding which audience you want to be found by.
