Science Fiction and Technology in BPL’s 250

Brooklyn Public Library released its 250 for 250 Booklist, selected by its librarians to represent books that shaped the United States.

“Here are the 250 most influential books in United States history.”

The science fiction selections that stood out to me include Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, Neuromancer by William Gibson, Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.

They explore censorship, artificial intelligence, climate collapse, scientific responsibility, gender, power, and the ways technology changes society.

The technology and engineering-related books that caught my attention include Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly, Moonshot by Brian Floca, On Photography by Susan Sontag, The Great Bridge by David McCullough, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

There are several here I need to add to my reading list.
