The Last Place I Wanted Advertising
OpenAI now has an entire website inviting companies to advertise inside ChatGPT.
“Go beyond keywords with richer context signals.”
FML. Nothing makes a useful product feel cheaper faster than squeezing an advertisement into the moment when someone is trying to think.
OpenAI says the ads will be clearly labeled, displayed below conversations, and kept separate from the answers. It also says advertisers can target people using the context and intent of their current conversation.
That last part is what bothers me. A search query reveals what I am looking for. A conversation can reveal what I am considering, what I am worried about, what I can afford, and why I need something in the first place.
Maybe the ads will be tasteful. Maybe they will genuinely be relevant. They are still ads, and the chatbot was one of the last places I wanted them following me.
Welcome to the future. It looks increasingly like every other website.
