Public Information Shouldn’t Have a Premium Tier
In Truth Social to sell Wall Street firms the ‘fastest’ access to Trump’s posts, Deborah Mary Sophia and Saqib Iqbal Ahmed report on Truth Social’s new paid data feed for banks and trading firms.
“Markets already move on Truth Social posts.”
I try not to make these notes political, but this crosses a line for me.
The president uses Truth Social to announce tariffs, foreign-policy decisions, and other information capable of moving entire markets. His media company now plans to charge financial institutions for faster access to those posts.
It may not meet the legal definition of insider trading, but it looks uncomfortably close to selling a privileged timing advantage on information produced through the power of the presidency.
Presidential announcements should be public information. They should not become a premium product that enriches a business tied to the person holding the office.
Trump’s continued business holdings and ventures while serving as president have already blurred too many boundaries. This adds to the feeling that access to the government itself is being packaged and sold to the highest bidders.
