A Rocky World With an Atmosphere
In Helium escaping from the atmosphere of a nearby rocky exoplanet orbiting in a habitable zone, Collin Cherubim and colleagues report evidence of helium escaping from LHS 1140 b.
“The near-infrared transit spectra show absorption by helium escaping from the planet’s atmosphere.”
This is a really notable discovery.
It does not mean we found life. It means we have found a rocky world in the habitable zone of another star with an atmosphere we can actually begin to study.
We are getting closer to replacing speculation about potentially habitable planets with observations of what those worlds are really like.
