More Than a Gigabyte Into 10MB
In ZERO: The Engineering Behind a Defiant Interactive Narrative, Sindhur Dutta breaks down the engineering behind an immersive WebGL experience built for desktop and mobile.
“The final build ships at under 10MB.”
The original Blender scenes contained more than a gigabyte of geometry, 8K textures, animations, and other source assets. The team compressed and reorganized all of that into an experience under 10MB that can still run at 60 frames per second on a budget Android phone.
That is an incredible amount of thoughtful engineering. They used compressed geometry and GPU textures, shared texture atlases, procedural shaders, background asset loading, and adaptive quality levels rather than simply cutting the experience down until it worked.
It looks amazing too. Great work. 👏
