Your Brain Can Learn to Hear Space
In Humans Can Echolocate, And It Changes the Wiring of the Brain, ScienceAlert explores research showing that humans can learn echolocation and that the brain adapts as the skill develops.

Most people associate echolocation with bats or dolphins, but humans can do it too. By making short, consistent tongue clicks and listening to the returning echoes, trained people can judge where objects are, estimate distance, detect doorways, and even distinguish between different shapes and materials.
What surprised me most is that learning the skill appears to physically change the brain. Research suggests that training strengthens the neural pathways involved in processing echoes, and in highly skilled blind echolocators, areas of the brain normally associated with vision can help process echo information. It's a remarkable example of neuroplasticity and a reminder that our brains continue adapting throughout adulthood.
If I were going to seriously learn echolocation, I'd approach it like learning a musical instrument or a martial art:
- Master the click. Produce a short, sharp tongue click that sounds nearly identical every time.
- Learn the sound of empty space. Stand in a quiet room and compare the echoes from walls, corners, and open doorways.
- Practice with large objects. Place a chair or cardboard box in front of you, guess whether it's there with your eyes closed, then verify your answer.
- Recognize different materials. Compare how wood, glass, fabric, metal, and plants reflect or absorb sound.
- Navigate familiar environments. Slowly walk through safe, familiar spaces using clicks to confirm where walls, furniture, and openings are located.
- Increase the difficulty. Add multiple obstacles, estimate distances before checking them, and eventually practice outdoors in more complex environments.
- Practice consistently. The best echolocators develop their abilities over months or years through thousands of repetitions with constant feedback.
The technique itself isn't difficult. The challenge is teaching your brain to recognize patterns in echoes that most of us have ignored our entire lives. Over time those faint reflections stop sounding like random noise and begin forming a mental picture of the space around you.
I find that incredibly encouraging. We often think we've reached the limits of our senses, but this research suggests we've only reached the limits of what we've trained ourselves to notice.
