GrapheneOS Is Getting Closer to Having Hardware Built for Its Requirements
GrapheneOS published a detailed explanation of how it protects data on locked devices, including disk encryption, secure-element rate limiting, hardware memory protection, automatic reboots, USB restrictions and its optional duress password.
The most notable detail is buried near the beginning:
Currently, only Pixels provide the hardware security features and updates required by GrapheneOS. That's going to change in 2027 thanks to our partnership with Motorola Mobility and progress being made by Qualcomm.
GrapheneOS currently depends on Pixel hardware because most Android manufacturers do not provide the secure elements, memory protections, firmware support and long update commitments the project requires. Its Motorola partnership is intended to change that by making future devices meet those requirements directly.
That does not necessarily mean Motorola will ship a phone with GrapheneOS preinstalled. The partnership currently appears focused on future Motorola flagships that officially support installing GrapheneOS, beginning with devices planned for 2027. GrapheneOS says the initial candidates are expected to resemble Motorola’s flagship Signature and Razr lines.
Still, this feels like the beginning of something larger.
GrapheneOS has spent years adapting its operating system to the limited hardware that satisfies its standards. Working directly with a manufacturer reverses that relationship: the hardware can now be designed to support GrapheneOS security requirements from the beginning.
I think a phone sold specifically for GrapheneOS is a plausible next step, even if that has not been announced. At minimum, we appear to be heading toward phones where GrapheneOS is an intended and officially supported operating system rather than an aftermarket installation available only on Pixels.
That could make private, hardened smartphones far more accessible to people who do not want to buy hardware from Google just to escape Google’s software ecosystem.
